Undergraduate Students

Our lab works on a range of research projects, but we primarily focus on animal models to study serious infections. Right now, we’re especially looking for undergraduate students to help with animal work this summer.

We have three grad students—including myself—working on big animal-based projects involving Clostridioides difficile (C. diff), an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, as well as Staphylococcus aureus, another important pathogen we’re studying.

If you’re interested in research, you do not need any prior lab experience—we will train you on everything you need to know. However, the work we do is hands-on and sometimes intense. We infect animals with bacteria and collect samples like organs and blood, so we are looking for motivated, dependable, and responsible students who are comfortable with that kind of work.

In addition to the animal research, our lab also has a few other ongoing projects, including:

  • A fungus project studying a deadly fungal pathogen that’s devastating frog populations,
  • Some chemistry-focused research, and
  • A couple of CRISPR-based projects in development.

We have limited spots for the summer, but if you’re interested in joining us in the fall or spring, definitely submit an application! We’ll likely have positions open as some of our current undergrads graduate.

Graduate Students

The Abel-Santos Lab accepts potential incoming graduate students for the Fall semesters. The graduation programs are as follows:

  1. M.S., Biochemistry
  2. Ph.D. Chemistry (Biochemistry concentration)

At UNLV, prospective graduate students pick an advisor prior to matriculation. If you are interested in joining the lab as a graduate student, please contact Dr. Abel-Santos in the Fall semester (or at the latest by early Spring semester) prior to matriculation. Applications are due March 1st of the matriculation year. Please send your cover letter and CV to Dr. Abel-Santos at ernesto.abelsantos@unlv.edu.
